Jack in the elections

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Jack Brodie has been elected to represent Northumberland and Ashington Academy in the Youth Parliament, with a resounding 1,532 votes in the recent Youth Parliament elections!

In February all students at Ashington Academy were given the opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote in the Youth Cabinet and Youth Parliament elections. Jack ran to represent the voices of young people in Northumberland and was able canvass across school before the voting opened. We’re extremely proud of Jack’s achievement and look forward to him using his elected voice to bring about social change through meaningful representation and campaigning!

Here are Jack’s reflections on his election success:

"I had the great privilege of speaking to so many of you in your form classes as we were conducting the Youth Cabinet & Parliament elections along with the Make Your Mark ballots. It is so important that we learn about democracy at our age as for some of us it isn’t too long until we can actually vote. As I’m sure you all know, the voting itself consisted of selecting from candidates. What you probably didn’t see is the fantastic help from several sixth formers who sent off the votes, along with the team at Northumberland County Council who worked through the night counting nearly 12,000 votes!

I’m over the moon to say that thanks to each and every one of you, I’ve been elected as a Member of Youth Parliament with over 1,500 votes, the most of any candidate. As promised, during my campaign I will work on protecting services within Northumberland and use my platform to advocate for Mental Health, the Environment and a Curriculum for Life."
