Ruth Auton

Ruth commenced her career in the NHS in 1983, training as a nurse in Manchester and worked in theatres and in the community before moving to Leicestershire in the early 1990s. She developed her interest in education and training and undertook qualifications whilst working full time and progressing her professional career. Ruth took on development opportunities and secondments and became a Ward Sister, before securing a permanent post as a Senior Trainer in a large acute trust.

Ruth’s appetite for continuous development led her to a secondment to the Health Authority, leading a county-wide project for support workers. Her passion for skills development and lifelong learning was reflected in her career ambitions as well as the completion of a master’s in education, specialising in leadership and management.

During a restructuring, Ruth left the NHS and worked in the fire and rescue service for just over two years as a Workforce Development Manager which provided her with a great opportunity to work in a different sector and organisational culture.  She returned to the NHS in 2008 and worked for Health Education England at a local, regional and national level, working on the national team leading on the implementation of 'shape of caring' recommendations.

An opportunity to be a director at her local hospice arose, and she took the opportunity to move back to a provider service organisation. Working for a charity provided her with great experience of working in healthcare and managing a business that had to fundraise 70% of their income.

Ruth and her family made the decision to move to Northumbria in 2019 and joined Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as Head of Education, Learning and Organisational Development in August.

Ruth is married and has a daughter who will be going to university in 2020 to study land and estate management, which reflect the families’ passion for rural and farming life. Ruth enjoys looking after and competing with her horses, which is a family sport and provides time for fun, family and friends, which are important to her.
