Sport

BTEC Sport provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that allow students to gain experience of the sport sector that will prepare them for further study or training.

Students will study three mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Anatomy and physiology
  • Unit 2: Fitness training programming for health. Sport and well-being
  • Unit 3: Professional development in the sports industry

Students will then study one optional unit form the extended certificate specification

BTEC Sport units also provide opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing essential employability skills.

This is the ideal course for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and employment in the sports sector.

 

Year 12

 

Learning outcomes

  • Whilst studying the Level 3 BTEC Sport students will develop theoretical knowledge within four units of study: Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training and Programming for Health and Sport and Well-being and Professional Development in the Sports Industry.
  • Within Anatomy and Physiology students will develop knowledge relating to the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, cardiovascular and energy systems. Students will be assessed in this unit through an external exam.
  • Within Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being students will explore the process required for screening clients and assessing their lifestyle and nutritional intake. As well as how to interpret data and suggest modifications to help improve the individual's fitness, health and overall well-being. Fitness training methods will also be examined for each component of physical and skill-related fitness. In this unit, you will draw on your learning from across the BTEC programme to complete an external assessment task set by the exam board.

  • The skeletal system
  • The muscular system
  • The respiratory system
  • The cardiovascular system
  • Energy systems

UNIT 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health and Sport and Well-being

  • Positive lifestyle factors and their effects on health and well-being
  • Negative lifestyle factors and their effects on health and well-being
  • Lifestyle modification techniques
  • Screening Processes
  • Health monitoring tests
  • Interpreting the results of health monitoring tests
  • Common terminology
  • Components of a balanced diet
  • Nutritional strategies for individuals taking part in training programmes
  • Components of fitness to be trained (Physical and skill)
  • Training methods for physical fitness-related components and skill fitness-related components
  • Principles of fitness training programme design

 

 

Year 13

 

Learning outcomes

  • The final unit of study is Professional Development in the Sports Industry. In this unit you will research the different possible careers and the associated job roles in the sports industry, then action-plan your development towards achieving a selected career aim. This unit will be internally assessed through the use of assignments set by your class teacher.

  • Interviews and selected career pathway-specific skills
  • Review and evaluation
  • Updated SWOT and action plan

Plus one other optional unit of study to be confirmed in Year 13.

  • Unit will be selected around the requirements of the learners in the group
