Sixth form extra-curricular actvities

Sixth form is about more than just exams and at Ashington Academy we believe these years are an important time for developing wider skills to take into adult life. We therefore ensure students can access a range of opportunities to develop key ‘life skills’ across all curriculum areas and through overseas visits, sporting activities and competitive events.

Trips

Annual residential trips include a skiing trip, outward bound visits to Ullswater and the bi-annual trip to New York. Other recent trips have included theatre and cinema visits, an annual visit to the Law Courts in Newcastle and the opportunity to watch various sporting events.

Our scientists in particular benefit from a broad range of field trips, which recently included a trip to the famous Large Hadron Collider at Cern in Switzerland. Our history and social science students have recently had the opportunity to visit London and the Palace of Westminster, Krakow and Auschwitz, and the Crown Courts.

Social scene

Our sixth form has a thriving social scene with regular organised events include bowling and Christmas shopping at the Edinburgh Christmas market as well as a post-exam trip to Northumbria University and to Pegswood Fire Station to complete a young drivers awareness course. The highlight of the social calendar, however, has to be the annual Year 13 leavers´ dinner - a marvellous end to sixth form, which is thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students alike.

Sporting success

Our sixth form sports teams regularly achieve success at local and national levels. There are regular team fixtures in all the major sports, including football and netball. Our U-19 football squad recently won the Northumberland league and made it to the quarter finals of the English Schools' Football Association U-19 national trophy. In addition to starring on the pitch, there are opportunities to coach younger teams and attain additional qualifications such as the Community Sports Leaders Award and the Higher Sports Leaders Award. Sixth form students are also able to use the sports hall, fitness room (extended in Summer 2016), new floodlit 3G Astroturf pitch, tennis courts and fields which provide outstanding sports facilities.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

We recognise the benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and many sixth form students are working towards the different awards with the support of our staff and the wider community.

Performing arts

Our sixth from musicians and performers are well catered for with a wide range of groups and music technology provision.

Actors perform to a very high standard in a variety of performances, including school productions which have recently included: Grease, We Will Rock You and Bugsy Malone as well as the annual ‘Live Lounge’ music event.

Artists have an outstanding variety of opportunities; local drawing trips and visits to galleries feed into high-quality work that is celebrated at our annual art and performance faculty evening.
