Welcome to Ashington Academy Sixth Form

When you join us at Ashington Academy Sixth Form, you will be joining a community of around 200 students. Whether you are already studying at the Academy or are new to the school, we will provide you with a carefully planned, step-by-step programme that will ensure that you are fully prepared to make the best possible choices.

We are committed to developing our students into confident and responsible young adults and cater for students looking to study a Level 3 pathway through A Levels or BTECs - challenging them to achieve their potential through high-quality teaching, positive learning experiences, support, guidance and a wide variety of opportunities.

The wellbeing of our students is crucial so we have developed a varied and flexible support structure. An experienced pastoral team is on hand to help students prepare for the transition from Year 11 to sixth form, backed up by systems that allow us to provide tailored support.

Academic staff are assisted by a team of careers, health and academic specialists, who provide the depth of knowledge necessary to support good decisions.

The vast majority of our Year 13 students progress to university or advanced level apprenticeships with local, regional and national employers. The strength of examination results opens up these life choices to our students.

Facilities

In January 2016 we moved into our new Advanced Learning Centre, a professionally designed study centre that contains a variety of specialist study facilities, including ICT provision and personal study areas.

The building also houses a social area for the exclusive use of sixth form students, who also have access to a comprehensive school and careers library with high-quality resources that support the curriculum and the development of independent learning, as well as promoting reading for pleasure.

Students benefit enormously from the expertise and guidance of a full-time librarian. In addition, all students have access to Newcastle University’s Robinson Library. Sixth formers are actively encouraged to use the libraries for both collaborative and quiet personal study. Using both libraries is essential for completion of their EPQ qualification to the highest standard.

Specific sixth form kitchen facilities and refreshments to purchase are available for students throughout the day in the social area, which will soon house a TV showing News 24 during lesson time to allow students to keep up to date with current affairs. During lunchtimes students are able to listen to music or another channel of their choice.

We are extremely proud of these facilities and encourage you to contact us at any time to take a look around.

Support after Year 13

Following their time at Ashington Academy Sixth Form, students follow a variety of paths. Many continue their education at university, some choose to enter their chosen profession whilst others opt for a gap year, either to broaden their experience of the world or to take a little more time to decide upon the direction they wish to take.

We support students in this decision-making process in a number of ways. For those who choose university, we make prospectuses available, organise day trips, invite representatives of universities to speak and offer personal advice about possible choices. Once choices have been made we offer a comprehensive support programme for the completion of the UCAS process. Following the receipt of final A level results, we continue to offer support to students in finalising the places they have chosen.

For students who decide that university is not for them, we offer the same level of support and guidance. Careers interviews are organised and support given in the application process. Where possible, we will help to organise work experience placements and do all that we can to help students place themselves in their chosen career.
