After a challenging year, today was a day of smiles and celebration at Ashington Academy as eager sixth formers collected their much-anticipated A level results.

Improvements have been made in many subjects enabling 89% of students to head off to university to study the course of their choice – an increase of 10% from last year.

Of those who are university bound, 32% are heading to Russell Group universities (up 15% from last year), the most selective and elite academic institutions, including our top performer Jessica Thomas who will take up a place studying modern and medieval languages at the University of Cambridge after achieving an impressive achieved two A*s in French and Spanish and an A in art.

Other top performers include:

  • Mya Wilson-Smith who was awarded an A* in biology and As in chemistry and maths and who is heading to the University of Sunderland to study medicine.
  • Hollie Newsome who achieved A*s in PE and geography, as well as an A in biology and who is off to study her passion of sport and exercise science at Leeds Beckett University.
  • Lauren Brown, Sophie Glenton and Georgia Mutton who all got a full sweep of As and are off to Northumbria University to study criminology with forensic science (Lauren), Newcastle University to study biomedical sciences (Sophie) and Royal Holloway in London to study psychology (Georgia).
  • Jack Collins who was awarded an A* in economics and Spanish and a B in history and is headed to Newcastle University to study modern languages.
  • Freya Bell who achieved a B in history, an A in law and an A* in psychology and who goes onto Northumbria University to study law.
  • Braden Gallon who was awarded an A in film, B in history and an A in law and who is heading to Newcastle University to study ancient history and archaeology.
  • Brooke Stacey who achieved an A* in economics and Bs in history and maths and who is beginning an accountancy apprenticeship.
  • Leena Phillips who achieved a B in art, an A in English and a B in psychology and who is heading to Durham University to study psychology.

“It is fantastic to see students celebrating their much-deserved A level results. Our young people have achieved some brilliant grades and I am so proud of the resilience, hard work and dedication that they have shown at such an important yet challenging time for them.

Other notable results include:

  • Joshua Walden -  A* maths and a D* in both food & nutrition and sport.
  • Ben Lawson -  D* in creative media, a distinction in business and an A in film studies - University of Sunderland, animation and games art.
  • Letahni-Leigh Armstrong  - As in law and psychology and a D* in applied science - psychology with criminology at Northumbria University. 
  • Ruby Bolton - art B, biology C, psychology B - Newcastle University, biomedical sciences.
  • Matthew Hall - business distinction, law B, economics B - Newcastle University, business management
  • Taylor Owens - biology A, business D*, chemistry B - University of Sunderland, paramedic science and out of hospital care.
  • Nathan Rogerson - IT D, engineering D*, history B - already started Level 3 welding and fabrication apprenticeship with Miller UK in Cramlington.
  • Ellen Sleightolm - art B, biology C, psychology B - Mental Health Nursing.
