Ashington Academy Ukraine Appeal

Date Published:
Tuesday 29 March 2022

As a school community, we are full of compassion and concern for the people of Ukraine and refugees from Ukraine and other countries around the world. On Friday 1 April 2022, we would like to come together in support of those impacted by the war.

Whole school collection

On Friday, we are inviting all staff and students to bring in any of the items from the list below* (compiled by the Red Cross as being particularly useful for refugees from Ukraine and elsewhere) with the aim of a large collection, like our incredible school community achieved for the food bank 'Give a Little Nourishment' appeal at Christmas. Items donated will then be sorted and passed on to a local collection point either to go to Ukraine, or to support refugees in the North East.

Blue and yellow

NE6 students at Ashington Academy and Bedlington Academy will also be donating a suggested £1 to the Disasters Emergency Committee ( Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal | Disasters Emergency Committee (dec.org.uk)) to come into school wearing blue and yellow colours, whilst following their normal dress code, to show their support. Students Year 7-11 must come into school in their normal uniform.

List of useful items

**Please note, most items on this list are tailored towards women and children. This is because the vast majority of refugees from Ukraine are women and children as the Ukraine has used martial law to ban men aged 18-60 from leaving the country, instead they must report for duty at a military recruitment office.**
